Hourly Rentals: When They Beat Point-to-Point

Several stops in one city usually costs less by the hour than as separate rides.

An hourly rental keeps the same car and driver with you for a block of time and a distance allowance. It is the better choice more often than people expect.

When renting by the hour wins

  • Several stops in one day: meetings, viewings, a day of sightseeing
  • Somewhere the return trip would be hard to book, such as an out-of-town venue
  • Anywhere you need to leave belongings in the car between stops

When a point-to-point ride wins

One journey with no stops is almost always cheaper booked as a single ride. Paying for a car to wait when it has nothing to wait for is simply a more expensive way to travel in a straight line.

Watch the two limits

Rentals are sold as hours and kilometres together (four hours and forty kilometres, for instance). Exceeding either is charged as an extra, so plan against whichever you will hit first.
